A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
