Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
A recent study indicates that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
