The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Maiden Address
In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.
The Fundamental Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
